This division of Maximum Rehab focuses on diagnosing and treating health issues that are unique to women.
Everything from a joint injury to heart disease will affect women differently than men, and therefore these issues need to be addressed from a female anatomical and physiological perspective. Many of the conditions that commonly affect women throughout their lifespan can be successfully treated with physical therapy, avoiding unnecessary use of medication or surgery.
A WOMAN'S POINT OF VIEW
"We encourage women with questions about how to best manage their problem to talk openly with their health care practitioner. It's important to feel comfortable discussing these issues with your doctor. Most likely, whatever your problem is, I have already treated women with the same problem. It's much more common than you think."
— Dr. Maureen O'Leary.
Conditions Treated include:
- Pelvic pain
- Dyspareunia (painful intercourse)
- Pre- and post-partum care
- Organ prolapse
- Low back pain
- Sacroiliac instability
- Vestibulodynia / vulvar vestibulitis
What to Expect
When you come to Max-Rehab for Women, evaluations are conducted in a private room. One of the most important steps of the evaluation is manual muscle testing of the pelvic floor muscles, which is performed by the physical therapist. This establishes a strength grade and tonicity of your muscles.
Based on the initial findings, a physical therapy diagnosis is established which identifies the cause of your problem. Interventions are then directed to treat the cause and minimize the symptoms.
Treatment Intervention may include:
- Therapeutic pelvic floor exercise prescription
- Manual therapy techniques
- External and internal electrical muscle stimuation
- Therapeutic muscle massage
- Postural re-training
- Patient education, videos and handouts
- And other indicated treatment protocols.
Max-Rehab for Women practices an interdisciplinary approach, which fulfills the holistic wellness of the patient and expands treatment options for women. So even if you are not sure if you are at the right place to manage your condition, our experts work with a healthcare team including physicians, Ob-Gyn's and psychotherapists to make sure you get what you deserve—THE BEST CARE. When necessary, a referral is made to the appropriate professional affiliate. We are dedicated to maintaining the dignity of each patient and provide a comfortable and safe environment for all.
Women's Health Physical Therapists have advanced education and training in evaluating and treating conditions pertaining to the pelvic floor. Dr. O'Leary earned essential competencies and certification through the Pelvic Rehab Institute at Duke University School of Medicine.
